The HEMI® engine is named for its hemispherical-shaped cylinder heads that allow for bigger valves, higher compression ratios and more efficient fuel burning, resulting in more power. This style engine has been in use since as early as 1901 but wasn’t debuted for a passenger vehicle by Chrysler until 1951, then called the “FirePower”. As the years went on, the HEMI engine became a staple of any true high-performance vehicle. They were put in vehicles built for the road and for the track, driven by professionals and amateurs alike. Check out Top Speed’s detailed telling of the evolution of the HEMI engine as it reached new benchmarks from one generation to the next.
